Winter 2012
Amanda Shires
Amanda Shires has flown under the radar for most of her career, whether as a member of the Thrift Store Cowboys or as a side player for such diverse acts as Billy Joe Shaver, Jason Isbell and DeVotchKa. But in 2011, riding the momentum of a remarkable release, the aptly titled Carrying Lightning, Shires took flight, establishing herself as a singular and compelling voice in Americana music.

For the Sake of the Song
Townes Van Zandt knew his time here would be short. "I don't envision a very long life for myself," Van Zandt once said. "I think my life will run out before my work does. I've designed it that way." In his ambitious new book, I'll Be Here in the Morning: The Songwriting Legacy of Townes Van Zandt, Brian T. Atkinson traces the influence of the "electric cowboy" in interviews with songwriting peers and followers. In this excerpt, Billy Joe Shaver remembers Texas' great songwriting poet, who lived fast and wrote faster.
