"Over the course of the last few years, I've written a lot of songs that I never used on any of my albums... orphaned songs that didn't quite fit the theme... I've also recorded new versions of a few old songs & in some cases, I recorded things for tribute CDs or other one-off projects... when I put together  a list of the recordings I liked, it came to twenty-eight... nobody wants to listen to twenty-eight songs, so I whittled it down to fourteen & then put each title on a slip of paper, dropped them in a bag & pulled each slip out, flopping it down on the kitchen table... this is the sequence of those slips of paper..."
